Startin' a fire

This Friday we all went out to Art Nilsen's summer camp for our first service project. Four of us went out in the morning and the rest of us joined in the afternoon after going to our internships (or going to see cows get butchered, depending.) The morning crew set up a tent, raked leaves, and just helped out with whatever needed doing. The camp property has only been remodeled in the last three years, so there's always more work to be done. In the afternoon, while Art's son and the builder were working on building the bathrooms, we set up the teepee and weeded the garden. Art's kids were all out there, and we enjoyed getting to know them.

That evening we (eventually) built a fire, after a long process of trial and error. Having been a Girl Scout for a good number of years, I was a little depressed that it took us as long as it did. Things we learned: 1) starting fires with paper is a lot easier than damp, waxy leaves., 2) fires produce smoke, which you should not inhale, and 3) you have to keep adding wood once you start the fire.

Saturday morning, those of us who stayed for the second shift did some more general work on the camp, picking up rocks and the like. It's a very peaceful place -- surrounded by farms, straight view of the ocean, and only a 20 minute walk from the beach, which we walked down to on Friday night. And there's a teepee. What's not to love?
